Ceremony at US Capitol Underscores Commitment of Congress & Private Industry to Sustainability

WASHINGTON, DC — April 20, 2010 — The Sustainable Business Institute (SBI) announced today the recipients of its 2010 Seal of Sustainability™. At a ceremony at the US Capitol Building, members of Congress presented the Seal of Sustainability to BAE Systems and Kleinpeter Dairy.

Issued by the Sustainable Business Institute, the Seal of Sustainability is a nationally recognized icon of business sustainability. It is awarded to companies that have demonstrated continuous commitment to sustainable practices. This trusted icon helps the public identify businesses that promote sustainability so consumers can make educated decisions about companies with whom they want to do business.

“Policymakers, businesses and consumers are working hard to find new ways to balance economic growth and prosperity with long-term sustainability,” said Jessica Fullmer, Founder of the Sustainable Business Institute. “This year’s Seal of Sustainability award recipients are using innovation and creativity to truly bring about change in helping preserve and restore our planet’s natural resources.

2010 Seal of Sustainability Award Recipients

The collective attributes and requirements of this award allow a broad range of companies to be recognized and rewarded for their ongoing commitment to sustainable business practices. Each company follows a different roadmap to sustainability, and is evaluated based on a 12-point system within three pillars: economy, society and environment. Each application is reviewed by the independent nonprofit National Pollution Prevention Roundtable (P2), the largest nonprofit membership organization in America solely devoted to pollution prevention. Here are some of the details around this year’s recipients:

BAE Systems is a global defense, security, and aerospace company with a proud heritage of innovation, state of the art engineering and technical excellence. This same ingenuity is now resulting in the following exemplary sustainability accomplishments at the company’s Greenlawn, NY campus:

Implemented the Utility Cost Takeout (UCT) strategy in response to rising energy costs. This technique involves an audit of individual rooms in order to determine how energy use, and thereby utility costs, can be cut. Thus far, the company has lowered its overall utility consumption by 38%.

• Joined PowerPay! NY, a demand response program that is part of new smart grid technology. Through the program, BAE Systems is paid by a third party provider for reducing energy consumption during peak electricity demand periods. One example of an energy consumption reduction effort during peak demand is low level lighting during lunchtime on certain floors of the company’s buildings.

• Adopted a recycling program in 2006, through which the company encourages employees to recycle and reduce solid waste. Recycling bins and informative posters were placed throughout the Greenlawn, NY campus, and Brown Bag Lunch Training Sessions were held in order to share recycling knowledge with employees. Because of this program, solid waste was reduced from 450 to 335 tons per year.

• Created a water conservation program in order to decrease water usage and curtail water costs. The program, started at the Greenlawn, NY campus but later transferred to other sites after significant savings were seen, includes the installation and implementation of closed loop cooling systems, water saving toilets, aerators and shower heads, the metering of cooling/evaporative towers and smart irrigation systems. Through this initiative, BAE Systems has saved more than 175,582,142 gallons of water, as well as over $1 million in costs.

• Installed three alternative/renewable energy systems in a 45,000 square foot building on the Greenlawn, NY campus. These systems include a solar water heating system, a small hybrid solar wind turbine, and a photo-voltaic array.

If you ask Jeff Kleinpeter of Kleinpeter Farms Dairy what makes their business extraordinary he’ll tell you it’s their passion for what they do. Quite simply, they love providing the safest and very best quality products they can. The company is now applying that same passion to implementing award winning, innovative pollution prevention programs including:

• A company-wide recycling program in order to separate recyclable from non-recyclable waste; additionally, produced and paid for radio and television commercials to promote recycling in Baton Rouge, as well as started a used light bulb and fluorescent light ballast recycling program for the farm itself and for its employees.

• A Wastewater Treatment and Solids Recapture System before expanding into the ice cream business; the system allows Kleinpeter Farms to recycle solid waste from the ice cream making process and use it for crop fertilizer, greatly minimizing the waste that leaves the treatment facility.

• An Ammonia Refrigeration Heat Recapture System in order to use waste heat to more efficiently increase the temperature of city supply water; this in turn has lowered electric energy consumption and thereby fossil fuel dependency.
